Wkly Hit List, 1/20/2024

Super Wild Card Weekend always lives up to the hype, and last week was no exception. Sports fans saw things in the beginning of the NFL Playoffs they have never seen before. All but of one game was a blowout, the Green Bay Packers became the first #7 Seeded team to win a playoff game, two NFC East teams were one and done in embarrassing fashion, and now we're promised another matchup between Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes. The Divisional Round starts today and this Sneak Peek of the Week tells us what we're in for this weekend.

What's One Thing You're Watching for Divisional Weekend?

Our Inside Scoop this week is another conversation late-night television, the real reason we stay up until 1:30am and can never get a good night sleep. But like I said before, nobody goes to bed at 9PM anymore. This week seems like a big week for late night shows after going off the air because of the Hollywood Strikes, and you know what I'm getting sick and tired of mentioning Hollywood Strikes, but they did help us a lot with our YouTube channel last year. Last Monday on MLK Day was the 75th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards in which Last Week Tonight with John Oliver won two Emmys for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series, of course, and for Outstanding Scripted Variety Series. Remember this is a new category that allows Last Week Tonight to go head-to-head with Saturday Night Live and whatever Variety Sketch Shows are left out there. Meanwhile, the Emmy for Outstanding Talk Series went to The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, and this was my reaction when the cast of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia announced it.

Part 1 – FTB EXCLUSIVE

The Daily Show with Trevor Noah | EMMYS WIN REACTION
Part 2 – FTB EXCLUSIVE

This show was first nominated for a Primetime Emmy back in 2018, and I'll always remember where I was when the announced it. Just between us, I was in a clothes changing room in Old Navy when it happened; not year after year The Daily Show has failed to win an award this big under the tenure of former host Trevor Noah, that is until last Monday. With Last Week removed from the Outstanding Talk Series category, that opened the door for other late night talks shows such as The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Late Night with Seth Myers, Jimmy Kimmel Live, and The Problem with Jon Stewart to win. The Late Show and The Problem seemed like the most likely to win, but in a shocking turn of events, it was the Final Season of Trevor's Daily Show that won. I've been watching Trevor since he started hosting in 2015 and like every other fan, I was shocked to hear that he was leaving in 2022.

What was even more stunning was when Comedy Central announced that celebrity guests would host The Daily Show for 4 episodes of 2023 for the entirety of 2023. Some say that the initial plan was to name a permanent host to take in Fall 2023 and that Hasan Minhaj would be announced as the top man for the job. But you know, God is not always kind to Actors who are a different color than white, not to sound racist or anything. It's just a recurring trend I've noticed, Chadwick Boseman passed away in 2020 before production of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever started, Jonathan Majors was found guilty for assault and harassment charges and will no longer play Kang in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and with Hasan Minhaj, his chances of hosting The Daily Show full-time were dashed because a New Yorker report accused him of using false stories in his comedy sets. I guess you can't hire who tells lies all the time even though people constantly lie everyday.

During Trevor Noah's Acceptance Speech at the Emmys, former correspondent Roy Wood, Jr. was mouthing the words "Please Hire A Host," he even [almost] confirmed it on social media not long after. So the question, will Comedy Central and Paramount finally announce a new host this year, well here's one way of putting it: "Maybe or Maybe Not." Media outlets such as Deadline Hollywood and Variety have come out with headlines like – Comedy Central Plans to Unveil New Steps for ‘Daily Show’ Next Week, ‘The Daily Show’ To Lean Into Correspondent Hosts Over Celeb Guests In 2024 After Emmy Success, Comedy Central Won’t Choose ‘Daily Show’ Host After Year-Long Search, and 'The Daily Show' Is Going Host-less, for Now. According to Deadline:

"...over the next few months, the focus will be on its correspondents to lead the show through this election year, rather than another phalanx of celebrity guest hosts. This plays into the idea that the show’s permanent host or hosts could already be on staff, a proposal that has been floated within Paramount. But the latest potential news team takeover comes at an interesting time for the correspondents as Deadline understands that a number of their contracts are currently up and there are negotiations going on right now to tie them up."

Variety this yesterday that: "After holding a year-long bake-off among various celebrities to find the next host of its signature “The Daily Show,” Comedy Central is going to try a new recipe. When the program returns from a hiatus, it is expected to rely heavily on a team of correspondents to lead each night.....though it is not clear if the network has struck upon its final assemblage of talent." It sounds to me like we could see new correspondents this year, as we did in 2023 with the additions of Troy Iwata and Grace Kuhlenschmidt, there hadn't been any new hires since Jaboukie Young-White in 2018.

Variety goes to say that: "Chris McCarthy, the Paramount Global has told people that “Daily Show” will rely more heavily on a “newsroom” concept with a group of correspondents leading the program. These people said executives may keep an eye out for a possible solo host in months to come, but don’t feel ready to choose one at this time."

One headline that I found most intriguing was this one from UPROXX – ‘The Daily Show’ Is Reportedly Going To Ditch Celebrity Guest Hosts And Stick With Correspondents Taking The Reins. I like the idea of "bringing it back to basics," given that Jon Stewart was not a Daily Show correspondent in the early years before he began hosting in 1999, but we've seen the incredible job that correspondents at taking over the chair when the main anchor is not around. Some have gone to host their late nights shows and spin-offs to The Daily Show. They are definitely going to need all hands on deck since the 2024 Presidential Election is this year, though we'll have to wait sometime next week to see what Comedy Central and Paramount has come up with, and this blog might bring it to you KlicKNettars next week.
