Wkly Hit List, 12/2/2023

It's December, that means the Christmas Season has officially begun. I'm back again for another week, however I won't be here on December 9th, because I've been hired to be script supervisor for another short film. I feel that this project will be much than all the others I have been apart of, so wish me luck. Now enough talk about me for a change, and let's see what we got this week on the 5-Day Rounder.

Disney's 100th Anniversary Celebration may not have been what the company had hoped all year, but there have been moments where they've been able to shine. For example, on December 20, Shanghai Disney Resort will open a whole new land themed after the 2016 Walt Disney Animation Studios film, Zootopia. We've seen the pictures of this land and they look amazing, and the centerpiece of it all is the trackless ride E-ticket attraction, well assuming it is a E-ticket attraction, Zootopia: Hot Pursuit. See how it works in our Sneak Peek of the Week.

The Inside Scoop for this week concerns late-night television, the real reason we stay up until 1:30am and can never get a good night sleep. But hey, nobody goes to bed at 9PM anymore. With the Writers' Strike ending in late September and the SAG-AFTRA Strike ending in early November, most believe that the late-night landscape is back in business, but I believe otherwise. That's because one show is without a full-time host, and you may or may not know that I'm talking about The Daily Show on Comedy Central. It's been almost a year since Trevor Noah left as anchor of The Daily Show, having hosted for seven years from 2015 – 2022. Beginning in January of this year, 2023, the show has enlisted the help of guest hosts to take over the chair for four times a week. Of course, I must say it's been fun seeing so many different people host The Daily Show all-year, but in 2024 everything changes. You see we found an article on Deadline Hollywood that is very interesting to us and the headline: "‘The Daily Show’: Inside The Search For A New Host As Duos Behind The Desk Take Center Stage." We're going to break down what it says and then I'm going to share my honest opinion about it all.

It starts out saying that Chris McCarthy, President and CEO of Paramount Media Networks at Paramount Global, has a big decision to make. Simply, it's all about how The Daily Show on Comedy Central still does not have a permanent host, which we already said, but I'll say it again in case no one is paying attention. The article we found says that "a decision is expected soon with sources telling Deadline that Paramount is facing pressure to name a new host by the end of the year." That sounds a little similar to when SAG-AFTRA was reported to be pressured into accepting the Hollywood Studios' best and final offer to end the Actors' Strike, though whatever is going on with SAG-AFTRA can wait for another time.

Moving back to the search for a new Daily Show host, there have been a number of shortlists and stars mentioned throughout the process, which was hampered by the writers and actors strike, there was also a stunning situation with former Daily Show Correspondent Hasan Minhaj, who basically had the job before a New Yorker article came out regarding "truth and lies." Some say that this expose may have caused Paramount to change their minds about Hasan Minhaj and he is no longer the front-runner to be full-longer. Deadline's article points out that "many in the late-night and comedy community believe that [Chris] McCarthy and his team already have viable options right under their noses and with it the opportunity to shake-up the talk show landscape with a fresh take and in the process bolster diversity by becoming the only show in late-night to have a woman behind the desk of a traditional nightly show. Hey, it could happen!

Let's not forget, Roy Wood Jr., arguably the most high-profile of The Daily Show’s correspondents, was considered one of the favorites, either solo or as part of a tandem, but just before the show returned in October, Roy revealed he was leaving after an eight-year run. In interview with NPR, Roy said: "I can't come up with plan B while still working with plan A. If you’re offered the chance to host The Daily Show at any point in your life.....you have to stop for a second and consider that. The next question becomes: What does The Daily Show look like in 2024? And what does late night look like in 2024?” This could be a "Never Say Never" situation like when people said CM Punk would not return to WWE at Survivor Series: WarGames, but then OH MY GOD, CM Punk returned to WWE at Survivor Series: WarGames.

During its News Team Takeover week, Jordan Klepper and Desi Lydic co-hosted the show on November 22nd as part of The Daily Show’s plan to test a combination model, bringing two of the show’s most well-known faces together in a new twist. The pair were lauded on social media for their turn behind the desk together and there was evidently a chemistry between them. In fact, number of late-night sources told Deadline Hollywood that it felt like a “reinvention” and a “new chapter” in the genre, if so then maybe The Daily Show is on to something. These could be the Regis and Kelly of Late-Night; wait......I mean the Kelly and Micheal of Late-Night, wait, wait, wait!......I think it's the Kelly and Ryan of Late-Night, right?; hold on, hold on!......what I meant to say was the Kelly and Mark of Late-Night! Man, that show has been through hell hasn't it? Take a look at Jordan Klepper and Desi Lydic from November 22nd.

Cord-Cutting Fees | The Daily Show

Klepper and Lydic, they are not the first to co-host the show this year; Michael Kosta and Ronny Chieng co-hosted back on October 19th and I was very surprised by it, though they made me laugh and introduced a new correspondent to the team, then Klepper co-hosted with Leslie Jones on November 16th. Deadline says that "If Lydic gets the job, she would be one of the only women in late-night after the cancelation of Full Frontal with Samantha Bee [on TBS]. Taylor Tomlinson is set to host After Midnight on Comedy Central’s sister network CBS after The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. However, the new replacement for The Late Late Show with James Corden is more of a game show format than a traditional late-night show. Having two people host The Daily Show is a model that is clearly working for the show, on the other hand, they might be heading in a different direction.

Sources have said "One interesting idea that was presented was to bring in a major A-list star in to host the show in the run up to the 2024 election." It's more then a formality that Donald Trump will be once again challenging President Joe Biden for the presidency next year in November 2024. The Daily Show's idea was to "have a star comedian come in as a stop-gap, which would have brought a lot of buzz to the franchise. But it seems this has not to have come to fruition." Some of the guest hosts this year who have had or will have a second stint at hosting are Leslie Jone and Sarah Silverman last month, followed by Charlamagne Tha God and Kal Penn are returning this month December. People believe that all four have been able to impress Paramount bosses and are in line for a potential permanent job alongside the likes of Chelsea Handler. Although, Kal Penn is thought to be the leading candidate and, similarly, would add some diversity to a somewhat white field. This video clip that we're about to show might be proof that Kal Penn might be the guy for the top job.

When the Writers' Strike came to end, Comedy Central said that a permanent host will take over in 2024. As we all head towards the end of the year, the television industry is slowly coming back after months of dealing with Actors and Writers on strike, but Deadline's article about The Daily Show caps off by saying: "expect [Chris] McCarthy to make a decision soon." Ever since Trevor Noah took over for Jon Stewart, The Daily Show was and will always be an inspiration to KlicKNet, and the shows we produce on our YouTube channel, FakeTV Box, Wkly Hit List LIVE and FTB 60. Since first coming up with the name KlicKNet in 2015, we have dreamed of making content like this late night franchise, and so we have. Personally, me and the rest of the KlicKNet team wish to expand our brand next year and the years to come with KlicKNet Productions and be involved with more films with us at the helm. We hope that whoever become the permanent host or hosts of The Daily Show will be able to carry it on for many years to come. Finally, if I were Chris McCarthy's shoes right now, then there's one person I would pick some to take over, and that's Ronny Chieng. That's my pick and I'm sticking to it.
