Wkly Hit List, 9/30/2023

This has been a fantastic week, not only for us over here at KlicKNet but for the rest of the Movie and Television Industry. After 148 days, Hollywood has its writers back after a three-year deal agree upon between the AMPTP and the WGA ended the Writers' Strike. But as you can imagine, something else is missing; Hollywood needs its actors back as well. The chances of the actors staying strike for five months are 0%, we'll explain why later but first up, it's time for a new look at the 5-Day Rounder which see many places in entertainment changing dramatically.

Our Inside Scoop this week will be devoted to providing an update on the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. After 78 days, it may not be too long until the Actors will get back to work, but more importantly, it may not be too long until the Actors get their fair pay. Last weekend, we went crazy covering the negotiations saga between the WGA and the AMPTP, and it all ended with both sides agreeing to a three-year deal last Sunday night. Then on Tuesday evening, the Writers' Guild union leadership announced that the Writers' strike would officially end on September 27 at 12:01 a.m. PDT after voting unanimously on the new deal.

The best part about this is that some writers have immediately gone back to work, even though the Writers' Guild still in solidarity with the SAG-AFTRA strike. All the late-night shows announced they would return to television now that they have their writers back. Real Time with Bill Maher was the first to do so last night (Saturday) on HBO, tomorrow (Sunday) it's John Oliver's turn as he has a brand new Last Week Tonight lined up for us on HBO. The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel Live, and Late Night with Seth Meyers will all return this Monday, October 2nd, and last but not least, The Daily Show returns Monday, October 16, and will continue having guest hosts for the remainder of 2023; They plan to name a full-time host early 2024.

Another piece of good news in this post-writers' strike period is that the Writers' Room for many scripted shows on CBS, NBC, FOX, and ABC will begin to reopen beginning Monday. This includes shows like Grey’s Anatomy, 9-1-1, The Simpsons, NCIS, Family Guy, Quantum Leap, Bob's Burgers, The Neighborhood, Fire Country, The Cleaning Lady, Young Sheldon, Law & Order, Ghosts, Animal Control, and Abbott Elementary. Even more so, it was reported on Deadline.com that Marvel Studios has begun setting up writers meetings later this Fall for pitches on its anticipated X-Men reboot movie, with a decision to name a scribe for said movie coming in early 2024.

However, the decision to end the writers' strike this week did not end the actors strike, which as of today is still ongoing. In fact, SAG-AFTRA even announced after the Writers' deal was done that it remains on the picket line, and called for renewed negotiations with the AMPTP. Soon after the WGA strike ended, SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP made a joint announcement saying that both sides "will resume negotiations for a new TV/Theatrical contract on Monday, October 2. Several executives from AMPTP member companies will be in attendance." Interesting enough, this will be the first meeting between the two unions since the SAG-AFTRA strike began on July 14, so maybe they can it done in their first round of sessions as movies and TV shows are in dire need of their actors this Fall.

These negotiations will be held at SAG-AFTRA's headquarters on Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles, California rather than AMPTP's headquarters in Sherman Oaks, which is where the WGA's negotiations took place. According to Deadline.com, this is because SAG-AFTRA officials were not satisfied "with the AMPTP's setup" and wanted a change of scenery, talk about being extra, huh? Nonetheless, KlicKNet, Wkly Hit List, FakeTV Box, and FTB 60 will all be on the job covering what's going on at the bargaining table between the Actors and the Hollywood Studios, insiders say that a new actors deal won't take as long as the writers' deal did, so let's wait and see Monday if they are right.
