Wkly Hit List, 7/29/2023

Boy, is it hot there or what?! Luckily, this is going to be the last full of week of July, the bad news is the heatwave might be just beginning heading into August. We're looking to what lies ahead next month and what might lie ahead for things like the actors and writers still on strike. If I could provide a quick update on that: the studios according to some sources that they refused to come to the negotiation table so quickly because they would rather let the actors and writers run out of what they need to stay on strike. With so much still undetermined in the Movie and TV Industry, al  we can do is monitor the situation closely, just like we monitor other headlines every weekday and put them in our 5-Day Rounder, take a look.

If you've seen the last new episode of FakeTV Box with Kwame Alexander, you should know that supporting the Writers and Actors who are on strike by staying off camera on KlicKNet's YouTube channel until the strikes are over. It's a pretty big commitment if I do say so myself. You see YouTubers everyday commitment to their work and their content in efforts to gain more subscribers and viewership. Down below, is a video from Attractions Plus who provides construction updates like the re-theming of Splash Mountain at Disneyland Resort. It's the perfect candidate for our Sneak Peek of the Week.

Our Inside Scoop this week brings us to the conclusion of Marvel Studios' Secret Invasion starring Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. People are very disappointed about how things turned out in the series finale, and we're about to recap why. WARNING: This piece may contain spoilers, so if you haven't seen Secret Invasion Episode 6 yet, stop reading now. If you would like to continue at your risk, be my guest.

When we last left Fury, he was given an ultimatum by Gravik to give him the "Harvest" or he'll sacrifice his own kind and many humans in his captivity. Gravik's spy Raava, who has been impersonating James Rhodes/War Machine - for who knows how long - has convinced US President Ritson to launch a nuclear strike on the Skrull base in Russia, an attack that will spark World War III and kill countless humans and Skrulls. Call it a no-win situation for the former Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. Fury calls his wife, Varra, it's essentially a goodbye call, and it's clear that Fury doesn't know if he'll come back. After the call, a car approaches the gates of New Skrullos, but when the guards open fire, Fury wasn't even in the car. After quickly shooting them down, Fury walks into the Skrull compound. This is where it gets serious.

After giving Gravik the Harvest, Fury asks him to spare Earth and conquer other planets. But Gravik refuses before using the Harvest to empower himself and attempts to kill Fury, but he is in for a big surprise. That surprise unfortunately is not Carol Danvers, Monica Rambeau, or Daisy Johnson, it turns out that G'iah was disguised as Fury and took the Harvest herself before giving it to Gravik. Needless to say, I don't to explain what happened next, the bottom line is G'iah got her revenge against Gravik for killing both her parents, but not without using the combined abilities of Captain Marvel, Drax, Ant-Man, Korg, the Frost Beast, the Black Order, and Mantis. It was quite a throw-down if you ask me.

Meanwhile, Rhodey/Raava successfully convinces Ritson to authorize the nuclear strike on New Skrullos, but is tricked by Sonya Falsworth into arranging for Ritson's evacuation. As Rhodey/Raava is getting the President to a new room, the President takes a gun from one of the agents, then Sonya surprises Rhodey/Raava and holds a gun to her head. That's when the real Fury is arrives the hospital, where he takes out the last of the Secret Service agents, and tells the President to aim his gun at Rhodey. Fury explains to the President that Rhodey has been replaced by a Skrull and that the real Rhodey is at the very compound the U.S. is about to bomb, along with dozens of more world officials.

Rhodey/Raava tries to convince the President to stay the course, with the bomb already being prepared. Sonya and Fury tries to convince the President otherwise by telling him to delay the strike, just then Raava tries to make a move and ends up getting shot in the head by Fury. Soon the President realizes the truth when Raava turns back into her Skrull form at death, and calls off the strike, allowing G'iah to free Gravik's human prisoners, such as the real Rhodey and Everett Ross, and G'iah then leads them all to safety. It's revealed that Rhodey was replaced very early on, with his body in a terrible condition, but we'll get into that next time

In the aftermath, Ritson issues a new bill declaring all off-world species as hostile forces and threatens to hunt down the remaining Skrulls on Earth, causing unrest as civilians publicly murder various high-profile officials for fear that they might be Skrulls. Elsewhere, G'iah finds herself being followed by Falsworth and her men; Falsworth proposes an alliance with her by offering the Skrulls the resources they need to fight against Ritson's war. G'iah is skeptical, as it sounds a lot like Fury and Talos' old arrangement; but Sonya wins her over by promising that it will be all business between them, and they will make the planet safer for both the Skrulls and the Humans.

Somewhere at night, Fury drives back out to the spot where he first landed in Episode 1 and calls the President, telling him off for making a bad situation worse. He tells Ritson that they have to act now to reverse the damage he's done, but the President refuses, telling Fury to get the Skrulls off Earth immediately. Once that conversation is over, Varra appears and Fury asks her to come to S.A.B.E.R. with him to help negotiate at a peace summit with the Kree, she agrees and they leave Earth together. There's some good news and bad news out of the closing moments of Secret Invasion; the bad news is that we did not get to see even character from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. appear in this series, much less any end-credits sequences. However the good news is, the story will continue in the upcoming film Armor Wars, and Nick Fury will return in The Marvels, in theaters on November 10th. Thanks for reading our six-week discussion about this spy thriller, and I look forward to doing it again when Loki Season Two drops on Disney Plus this October.
