The First UPDATES of 2022

2022 feels like more than a brand new year, but a chance for all of us to finally get back to normal, like 2019 normal. I think without a doubt that 2019 was the last great year of our lives, the next two afterwards were the absolutely worst. If this is the year the COVID-19 pandemic comes to an end, then we can't messed this up, it's only been one and a half days into the New Year and already COVID-19 is messing up plans. We'll get to what I mean by that later, right now it's time to see the First 7-Day Round-Up of 2022.

Like I said before, the New Year just started and COVID-19 has already messed things up. Last night was WWE Day 1, the WWE's first premium live event of the NEW YEAR and in the Main Event, we were suppose to see Brock Lesnar vs Roman Reigns for the WWE Universal Championship, but just hours before the event started, Roman Reigns tested positive for COVID-19 and the match was canceled. Even more shocking, Brock Lesnar was added to the WWE Championship which started out as one-on-one, then a Triple Threat, then a Fatal 4-Way, to being a Fatal 5-Way. The biggest shock of all was when Lesnar went into that match and came out as the NEW WWE Champion. i saw a tweet that says that this changes everything for Brock is still in an on-going feud with Roman Reigns, only god knows what'll happen next. But it just goes to show why this pandemic has to end sooner than later and let's hope that this is the year it'll happen. With all of this being said, let's go over to our new Max Sports rundown.

Our first Main Story of 2022 is about Pfizer. Two weeks ago, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) would authorize the use of Paxlovid, a first-of-its-kind pill developed by Pfizer to treat COVID-19 for patients age 12 and over who are vulnerable to severe illness of the virus. Previously, we talked about how Merck was making a antiviral pill against COVID-19, however, their pill was authorized by the FDA just after Pfizer's. From what we can gather from The New York Times, the treatment consists of 30 pills over five days — each small packet has three pills in it, two of Pfizer’s pills and one of ritonavir, a low-dose drug commonly used to treat HIV, which can help Pfizer’s drug remain active in the body longer. The pill is also available in Britain now that UK regulators have approved, so now we have more help with fighting this terrible virus. Of course, while most people believe that this could all work, we still need everyone to be vaccinated in order to fight COVID-19. Keep it here for some of the thoughts about this news in the first #TwitterTrend of 2022.

The New York Times @nytimes
Tens of millions of Americans will be eligible for Pfizer's Covid pill if they get infected with the virus, though the federal government's supply will be limited at first. Pfizer’s studies indicate that it is likely to work against the Omicron variant. https://nyti.ms/3Fy65Mw
The Associated Press @AP
The U.S. has authorized the first pill against COVID-19, a Pfizer drug that Americans can take at home to reduce the risk of hospitalization and death. The announcement comes as the U.S. braces for a wave of new infections from the omicron variant.
POLITICO @politico
The FDA authorized the first ever at-home Covid pill today, marking a significant development in the pandemic response https://politi.co/32m0oCR
The Daily Beast @thedailybeast
The FDA approved the first at-home treatment option for COVID-19. The pill, produced by Pfizer, was approved for those aged 12 and up who test positive for the virus and face a higher risk of hospitalization. https://t.co/Fn96qMvqEI

🧵/There’s a lot of hoopla over Pfizer’s at-home COVID pill. Time for a quick reality check because I sense that too many folks are thinking that today’s FDA authorization means that they can move forward with holiday plans...and they’re in for a big disappointment

Jorge A. Caballero, MD @DataDrivenMD
2/ Paxlovid isn’t “a pill” it’s actually 3 pills that you take all at once...two times per day...for 5 days. The fact is that some people can’t swallow pills, and some can’t swallow that many pills in one sitting

Jorge A. Caballero, MD @DataDrivenMD
3/ I’m seeing a lot of journalists emphasizing that Paxlovid is for “at-home” use, which is technically true but let’s be clear that this isn’t available over-the-counter (and shouldn’t be). You can’t just pick up Paxlovid on your way to the airport

Jorge A. Caballero, MD @DataDrivenMD
4/ To that point: doctors & NPs will not be prescribing Paxlovid “just in case” any time soon. It is *NOT* authorized for persons that *may* become infected. A positive direct test (e.g. PCR) is required per the terms of the Emergency Use Authorization

Jorge A. Caballero, MD @DataDrivenMD
8/ So, when we take this all into consideration, the honest truth is that the persons who are most likely to benefit from Paxlovid are the same ones that are most likely to have a contraindication to the drug.

Jorge A. Caballero, MD @DataDrivenMD
9/ So, let’s put Pfizer’s anti-COVID *pills* into the proper context: they're a backup plan. The first line of defense is still: N95/KN95 masks + vaccination

The reason to celebrate Paxlovid is quite simple: it may help lower the *hospitalization* curve…but even that’s TBD.
