This Week's UPDATES
Can't wait to tell everyone what my week was like last week, but first lemme me show you all what's on the 7-Day Round-Up, though it's all good news as you can see.
My first week talking classes at Brooklyn College was quite ok, while I'm going to me students in-person on campus in some classes, all of them are going to have us meet via Zoom. I'm actually liking the use of Zoom, minus the difficulty of keeping things out of your background that you don't people to see on camera. Though, one class four in-person meetings in the Fall, and another requires us to be in-person only once in December, so at least I'll get to be at Brooklyn College five times this year. But if the COVID-19 pandemic ends very soon which is kinda though to determine, I'm be going to the BK more often next year. Things might be looking up for me and others going through a tough time in this pandemic, and things are definitely looking for some teams in the MLB as the race to the postseason will soon begin next month. Let's see what these teams are up in baseball as we look at a brand new Max Sports rundown.
Our Main Topic this week concerns the State of New York. A couple of weeks ago, Andrew Cuomo resigned from this position as New York Governor after a withering report from the state’s attorney general documented multiple accusations of sexual harassment against women. This caused multiple people including President Joe Biden to call that Cuomo resign immediately which he would do so on August 10th. Then at 12:00 AM Eastern Time (ET) on August 24th, New York got a brand new governor, and it's a lady, former lieutenant governor Kathy Hochul was officially sworn in by New York Chief Judge Janet DiFiore in a private ceremony, and a public ceremonial event was held later at the State Capitol's Red Room. Today we're going to dive into two important questions: Who the heck is Kathy Hochul? And what does she have planned as the new Governor of New York. Through several sources within the political #TwitterTrend down below, we are going to try to answer these two questions.
Born on August 27, 1958 in Buffalo, New York, Hochul's family struggled financially during her early years as a child as lived in a trailer near a steel plant, which is almost like Matt Foley living in a van down by the river, almost. In college, Hochul became politically active at Syracuse University, leading a boycott of the University's student bookstore over high prices and an unsuccessful effort to name the university stadium after alumnus running back and future NFL player Ernie Davis. Elsewhere, she successfully lobbied the university to divest from apartheid South Africa, and in 1979, the student newspaper, "The Daily Orange." awarded her an "A", citing the campus changes as evidence for the grade. When graduating, she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from the Maxwell School of Syracuse University in 1980 and then she went to the Catholic University Columbus School of Law in Washington D.C. where earned a Juris Doctor in 1984. Hochul began working for a D.C. law firm before moving on as a legal counsel and legislative assistant to U.S. Representative John LaFalce and U.S. Senator Daniel Moynihan, and for the New York State Assembly, before seeking elected office. From 1994 to 2007, she became a Member of the Hamburg Town Board in Erie County, New York. From 2007 to 2011, she was County Clerk of Erie County by Eliot Spitzer who was Governor at that time, but then she opposed his proposal to allow undocumented immigrants to apply for a driver's license without producing a social security card, and said that if the proposal went into effect, she would seek to have any such applicants arrested.
Now moving into a broader political space, Hochul ran in the May 24, 2011, special election to fill the seat in New York's 26th congressional district left vacant by Democrat Chris Lee who resigned. Sources say that her residence in Hamburg, just outside the 26th district, became an issue during her campaign, though it did not disqualify her from seeking the seat and in one month's time, she won the election by beating Republican nominee Jane Corwin, and moved into the district. In 2012, Hochul's district was renumbered to the 27th district and she lost to Chris Collins during the 2012 election, but during her tenure as a Representative she engaged in trade, energy, fiscal issues, social issues, and health care in which she expressed support for the Affordable Care Act passed by the 111th Congress and said during her campaign that she would not vote to repeal it. Between 2013 and 14, Katy Hochul had not held any position of office, Governor Andrew Cuomo who was running for a second term in 2014 named her as his choice for lieutenant governor, and after winning the general election, she was officially sworn in on January 1, 2015. As lieutenant governor, she was given certain tasks by Cuomo such as chairing 10 regional economic development councils that were the centerpiece of his administration's economic development plan and chairing the Task Force on Heroin and Opioid Abuse and Addiction in New York state. In 2018, Hochul supported legislation to provide driver's licenses to undocumented immigrants, which she had opposed previously in 2007, but she said that the circumstances had changed.
Apparently, her relationship with Cuomo wasn't all good, Hochul once said that: "it’s very clear that the governor and [her] have not been close, physically or otherwise in terms of much time". She called Cuomo's behavior toward women "repulsive and unlawful" before praising his decision to resign August 10th of this year. So now this brings us to her new role as the State of New York's first female governor and what exactly does she have planned, well first and foremost, Hochul confirmed on August 12th that she plans to run for a full term as governor in 2022, and we'll be keeping an eye on what transpires then and the rest of the 2022 Midterm Elections next year. One interesting thing that's been floating around lately is how NY State Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins was named acting lieutenant governor until Hochul appoints a successor, which means that two of the top spots in New York's government were held by two women, so congratulations to both of them for making History, or as social media likes to say "HERstory!" But now, Hochul has selected former member of the New York State Senate from the 30th district Brian Benjamin as her nominee for lieutenant governor, they'll like a genders-swapped version of President Biden and Vice President Harris. Hochul has also ordered a statewide mask mandate inside all New York schools as most students are still unvaccinated from COVID-19, they're like am empty water bottle that just dying to be fill prompt toe. Right now, Governor Kathy Hochul's current priorities are with the surge in the Delta COVID variant and keep the virus from spreading even worst in New York, and if all that I have said isn't help readers who she is, may be the following tweets down below back things up for me.
