This Week's UPDATES

Not how I wanted to celebrate the first day of summer or Father's Day but I found myself depressed after the Brooklyn Nets could not win their playoff series over the Milwaukee Bucks with only two chances to do so. With my graduation from LaGuardia Community College over from last Thursday, I can only moved forward to what this lies ahead for me this summer, though I have a feeling it's going to a time of good news and bad news, much like this week's 7-Day Round-Up.

Like I said before, the Brooklyn Nets are out of the 2021 NBA Playoffs, and who wins tonight between the Philadelphia 76ers and the Atlanta Hawks will advance to the Eastern Conference Finals to meet with the Milwaukee Bucks. We've got a whole lot of games today on Father's Day including in the MLB and NHL, and things get HOTTER AS HELL when WWE hosts Hell in a Cell as the last pay-per-view in Thunderdome right before the wrestling company heads back on the road for the first time since March 2020. Our Main Topic this week is about Juneteenth, which started back on June 19, 1865 when slavery in the United States ended after the emancipation of the last remaining slaves in Texas. Last Thursday, President Joe Biden signed a bill into law making June 19 (aka Juneteenth) an official federal holiday. The most incredible thing about this is that this will be the first holiday to be established by Congress since Martin Luther King Jr. Day was signed into law in 1983, and how probably that another holiday based around black folks has been into law in the last thirty-eight years. Millions are thrilled to have celebrate Juneteenth yesterday as an official holiday, in fact, lawmakers and entertainers like singer-songwriter Usher attended a special signing ceremony after the law was signed, and earlier on last week, the measure passed both chambers of Congress with overwhelming support. For more news on the signing of Juneteenth, we've got an all out #TwitterTrend with President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris delivering remarks prior to signing the legislation into law last Thursday.

#Juneteenth is a part of American history, and I’m proud to see it recognized as a national holiday.

I’m thinking of Opal Lee, who spent years advocating for this historic moment and today got to see her work through.

Thank you to @POTUS, @VP, the members of Congress, and the leaders and activists - especially Ms. Opal Lee - who have worked for years to make Juneteenth a federal holiday.

Our work for true justice and equality will continue. #Juneteenth2021

On June 19, 1865 — two months after the Civil War had ended — more than 250,000 enslaved people in Texas were freed.

The newly emancipated responded with cries of joy and prayers of gratitude, a celebration that became known as Juneteenth.
