This Week's UPDATES

Earlier this week, I was "heartbroken" to know that I would not be accepted into the BFA program in Film/Video at The City College of New York this Fall. To think I worked most of the year trying to get into City College and there was just one hurdle standing in my way; I call it the "biggest hurdle of them all." I was unable able to jump over because as it figures, there are more students than me want to be accepted and continue their education and passion in Film production, and all I can do wish the students who gone in good luck this fall and hope they make the best at City this fall. As for me, I'm in the midst of a Plan B which seems more likely to help me with my education and passion, and that plan to apply for the Film Program at Brooklyn College, but to get everything done fast enough that I either get in this Fall or next Spring in 2022. While I'm continuing to plan out my future, I'm able to share another 7-Day Round-Up on this blog which is about to see some big changes in a few weeks.

Our Main Story this weeks concerns Graduation, the definition of this is: the receiving or conferring of an academic degree or diploma. Most graduations take place in June, mine's is going to be from LaGuardia Community College and is set to take place on June 17th, and my family is planning a big graduation brunch in our backyard on that same day. Now, I'm not hear to talk about my graduation, I'm here to talk about a big story in the news this past week regarding a graduation in Texas. Paxton Smith, a valedictorian from Lake Highlands High School in Texas appeared at her graduation a while back, and she literally just tossed out her pre-approved speech and decided to use the opportunity speak up for abortion rights. The meaning behind this was that there was a law passed by Texas Governor Greg Abbott last month which prohibits abortions after six weeks, even in the case of rape or incest, so when listening to young Paxton, you can hear how emotional she is about what she calls a “heartbeat bill." In her speech, Paxton would say that:

"I am terrified that if I am raped, then my hopes and aspirations and dreams and efforts for my future will no longer matter; I hope that you can feel how gut-wrenching that is, I hope that you can feel how dehumanizing it is, to have the autonomy over your own body taken from you."

It's understandable that when news like this break out, you can't help but speak out against it and tell the whole world how you feel. When I talk about gun violence on this blog, it's done because I can't help but not speak about so much violence and would like nothing more than to see come to an end. So, I congratulate Ms. Paxton for not being afraid to say what's on her mind and being able to find the right platform to take about a very serious subject that needs more attention. For more on this, here comes a special edition of #TwitterTrend showcasing the speech Ms. Paxton made at her High School graduation.

Paxton Smith is the valedictorian of Lake Highlands High School's class of 2021. She submitted her commencement speech for approval, then tossed it aside. She had something else to say about the new state law that bans abortions as early as six weeks. https://t.co/NUd5LLmU1a?amp=1

Remember the name and face: #PaxtonSmith of Dallas, valedictorian of her high school class, who launched herself on what surely will be a leadership role in and for her generation by defiantly speaking out against the insane “fetal heartbeat” bill in the #GOP-run #TX legislature. https://t.co/oJauH27zrU?amp=1

Paxton Smith is my hero. This is raw courage, right here. She ripped up her valedictorian speech and instead gave her class a dose of righteous, well-reasoned fury over the war on women's bodies. Take the time to watch. You won't regret it. (She comes in at 4:37.)

Dear Paxton Smith, welcome to the good fight! If you ever need a job or anything at all - look me up.

Paxton, have you thought about running for office? Call me.

"We have spent our whole lives working towards our futures, and without input and without our consent, our control over our futures has been stripped away from us".

Paxton Smith of Texas...y'all. The next generation gonna be alright.
