This Week's UPDATES

One more week before school, and my own living room has become my classroom. I've been watching a few CUNY ads on YouTube, and they made realize how much I miss being on campus at LaGuardia Community College. It may be not like York College is which is not too far away from my house, it may not be like Queensborough Community College which my mom at one time fought would be a good fit for me, but LaGuardia was the only school last year that made feel right at home. I have classes on, get this: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and..............early Saturday. I normally do chores on Saturdays, but now that they have been moved to Fridays, and it just done on me that it's almost time for the NFL season to start and I haven't found my Jets jersey yet. While I get everything ready for the new school year and the new football year also, check out this week's 7-Day Round-Up, and if you're all good little boys and girls and read this post, then maybe next week I've give a sneak preview of what the #fakeTVBox will be like on YouTube.

Our Main Story this week is about Thursday Morning, last Thursday Morning to be exact, that when I saw on my iPhone that Basketball Hall of Fame guard Steve Nash was named the new head coach of the Brooklyn Nets. You can that this could "Déjà vu" from seven years ago when the Nets hired Jason Kidd as their head coach for a team that was built to win a championship and failed, but it looks things could a lot different from all those years ago. Like Kidd when he first started, Steve Nash has zero coaching experiences, but apparently he has had a good relationship with Nets star Kevin Durant. The two of them were together when Kevin Durant won back-to-back titles with the Golden State Warriors in 2017 and 2018, Nash was a player development consultant for the Warriors for the past five years, but before then he had an incredible resume as a player of the game of basketball. Listen to this:
  • Drafted in 1996 by the Phoenix Suns as the 15th Overall Picked
  • Played with the Phoenix Suns 1996-1998, 2004-2012
  • Played with the Dallas Mavericks 1998-2004
  • Played with the Los Angeles Lakers 2012-2014, then retired in 2015
  • 2-Time NBA Most Valuable Player (2005, 2006)
  • 8-Time NBA All-Star (2002, 2003, 2005–2008, 2010, 2012)
  • 3-Time All-NBA First Team (2005–2007)
  • 2-Time All-NBA Second Team (2008, 2010)
  • 2-Time All-NBA Third Team (2002, 2003)
  • 5-Time NBA assists leader (2005–2007, 2010, 2011)
  • 4-Time 50–40–90 club (2006, 2008–2010)
  • Basketball Hall of Fame, Class of 2018
Aside from all of this, the question is whether or not he is a good fit for the Brooklyn Nets. As a player development consultant, Nash helped turned players on the Warriors into homegrown stars, including Durant, he seems to be a great mentor to all young players and veterans who become better players with his wisdom. Nets General Manager Sean Marks shares a strong professional and personal relationship with Nash, having played together for at least two seasons in Phoenix. When asked by ESPN about what Durant and Kyrie Irving wanted from the new head coach, Sean Marks explained that: "They wanted a great communicator. They wanted someone they would respect. ... A lot of this relationship will be built off the court. A lot of what I know of Steve is as the ultimate communicator. That's what the guys asked for ... a communicator ... and that's what they got." So it seems that Irving and Durant have signed onto to this new hire, but does every one else think about? Like most fans, I believe the Nets would choose a black coach with enough experience to carry them to a championship, but the team surprised everyone by hiring a white coach instead. Listen to the comments on that one as part of an All-Out edition of #TwitterTrend.

The Nets have hired Hall of Fame point guard Steve Nash as their new head coach, @NYTSports has learned

Marc Stein @TheSteinLine
Interim coach Jacque Vaughn was considered for the post, but league sources say Nets GM Sean Marks led a stealth pursuit of Nash that lured the two-time MVP to full-time coaching at age 46 after others had tried. @wojespn reports that Vaughn will stay on as a Nets assistant

Marc Stein @TheSteinLine
Here is @NYTSports‘ first story on the Nets’ blockbuster hiring of Steve Nash as their new coach: https://t.co/iVA6NzLWy1?amp=1

Adrian Wojnarowski @wojespn
Hall of Fame guard Steve Nash has signed a four-year contract to become the next coach of the Brooklyn Nets, sources tell ESPN.

Malika Andrews @malika_andrews
Steve Nash, in a press release: “Coaching is something I knew I wanted to pursue when the time was right.”

Christopher Lavinio @ChrisLavinio
Steve Nash will be introduced as the franchise’s next head coach via Virtual Press Conference on September 9th.

Adrian Wojnarowski @wojespn
In recent weeks, Nets owner Joe Tsai and general manager Sean Marks have been aggressive in recruiting Nash to make the leap that he had so far resisted in his retirement: head coaching.

Keith Smith @KeithSmithNBA
One important thing with the Nets hiring Steve Nash:

Nash and Kevin Durant had a great relationship when Nash worked with the Warriors. Durant relied on Nash's counsel during his Golden State years.

Nash's success will be about managing personalities as much as anything else.

Jay Williams @RealJayWilliams
Soooo Steve Nash is the new head coach of the @BrooklynNets ... glad I have my season tickets.

Jeff Goodman @GoodmanHoops
Steve Nash coaching KD and Kyrie. This is gonna be interesting …

Chris De Silva @cdesilva23
Yo, Steve Nash might unlock a new level of Kyrie Irving that we have not seen yet. I'm really excited to see how this looks.

Kristian Winfield @Krisplashed
The one thing I've maintained throughout this entire #Nets coaching search is that we have no idea who KD and Kyrie wanted. I didn't expect them to hire Steve Nash, but I didn't expect any of the popular names, either.

Brian Lewis @NYPost_Lewis
As if anybody needed a reminder about the star power of the #NBA Steve Nash was a player development consultant for the #Warriors, and worked closely with Kevin Durant. They developed a good relationship. Now he’s head coach of a win-now #Nets team.

Damon Amendolara @DAonCBS
So Kevin Durant hand-picked Steve Nash, who worked behind the scenes at Golden State, to run the Nets even though he has zero coaching experience. There’s pressure to win immediately & KD/Kyrie are two of the most high-maintenance players in the NBA.

What could go wrong?

Peter Edmiston @peteredmiston
It's got to be dispiriting for so many Black assistant coaches to see this, though. Jacque Vaughn couldn't have done more. Only 5 Black head coaches now and we're seeing a lot of front offices seem more comfortable with candidates that look and sound like themselves.

Kev @NBAcouchside
Maybe Steve Nash will become a great head coach, but something really doesn't sit right about him leap-frogging Jacques Vaughn like that, given how little actual coaching experience Nash has.

Kev @NBAcouchside
Even if it wasn't Vaughn, there are a ton of guys - many of them also former players - who have been grinding, putting in the work as assistants in the league or head coaches at lower levels who didn't even really get a look for this job.

Isaac @WorldofIsaac
Imagine working as an assistant coach in the NBA for years, waiting for an opportunity then BOOM, Steve Nash swoops in out of nowhere with no coaching experience and takes over a team with two legit superstars.

Michael Lee @MrMichaelLee
Was hoping Jacque Vaughn would've gotten the shot but Steve Nash has this in his favor going into next season: Steve Kerr, Tyronn Lue & Nick Nurse had no prior NBA head coaching experience before stepping in to win the ch'ip. Nash's past with KD, HOF status & intellect won't hurt

Tyler R. Tynes @TylerRickyTynes
The blackest coaching pool in years:

Ty Lue
Ime Udoka
Sam Cassell
Jacque Vaughn
Adrian Griffin
Mark Jackson
Stephen Silas
Darvin Ham
Jahmahl Mosley
Jason Kidd
Wes Unseld Jr
David Vanterpool
Roy Rogers
Nate McMillan
Alvin Gentry
Mike Brown

And Steve Nash got a job w/0 experience

Tom Haberstroh @tomhaberstroh
In 2012-13, there were 14 Black coaches in NBA. When the playoffs started, there were 8. Now it's 5: LAC's Doc Rivers, ATL's Lloyd Pierce, CLE's JB Bickerstaff, DET's Dwane Casey and PHX's Monty Williams. Still openings in New Orleans, Chicago and Indiana.

Marquise Francis @theMarquiseF
I'm sure Steve Nash will be a solid head coach, but you can't ignore the blatant disregard for Black coaches in a league that has majority Black players! Like c'mon!!

Hak33m Flag of Nigeria @PrinceHAK33M
Steve Nash just coming out of nowhere  with no coaching experience to coach a future hall of famer and an all star is peak privilege. Black coaches gotta grind as assistants forever and ever for a mediocre job.

Steadman™ @AsteadWesley
Nash may be great, and seems like a really cool dude, but think how long Black former players (even the great ones) are pushed to assistant jobs/D league/college before they get their first head coaching shot (if they ever get one)

73-9 and they LIED Chequered flag @CuffsTheLegend
what just happened to Jacque Vaughn happens in corporate America jobs everyday. Lose your job to someone with less experience that’s less qualified but hey you can help train them and we’ll throw you a bone. It never fails when it comes to Black Coaches.

Brooklynsbeat @brooklynsbeat
Steve Nash is one of the most incredible b-ball minds the NBA world has ever seen. He also has experience with orgs as a GSW player development person - and a strong relationship with KD. I love it. Good on #Nets being classy on Jacque in public when he was never  getting the job

Nata Edwards Is Tired @NataTheScribe
Look, I like Steve Nash. But this is a slap in the face to black assistant coaches in the league everywhere. Full stop.

And it’s a growing trend.
