This Week's UPDATES

It's the last weekend in June and I get the feeling that next month in July is going to be sizzling with goodness. The reason that I sound so optimistic is coming up shortly, but first, I want to point out something really quick. When I saw all those riots and protests on TV and online, I knew right away that they would only make things worst in this country as we are still in the midst of a pandemic. In my honest opinion, the death of George Floyd has not only led to chaos in the streets, but also our chances of containing the virus, and because of the surging cases in COVID-19, more businesses have shutdown, the curve in the United States has gone back up, and many places such as Disneyland Resort in California will miss their reopening dates. For this week's 7-Day Round-Up, I have placed just two stories that involve what effects COVID-19 has had on major events and society, but one can only hope that we'll get some good news despite the spikes in cases in many different places in the US.

I am happy to say that our Main Story this week concerns Major League Baseball and its return-to-play coming soon. MLB. was one of the many sports league around the world and in the United States that had to shut down due to the pandemic, it failed to finish spring training and start the 2020 season on time. Last month in may, it seem like the MLB owners and players' association had come to an agreement that would have given us baseball fans a 82-game schedule beginning in early-July and also include Universal DH and an expanded postseason/ But the MLBPA wanted full prorated salaries to be added and would give several counterproposals to the league would only made the chances of baseball in 2020 this year seems more and more unlikely. About two weeks ago, it was reported that both sides were coming to agreement and they have finally worked out issues after realizing their common enemy is the coronavirus, so the league offered a 60-game season to the players which included the full prorated salary, Universal DH, and a 16-team postseason. But the players wanted to play more games as that meant more money a made one last counterproposal for 70 games, the MLB commissioner made it clear that more than 60 games was impossible due to the threat of a second wave of COVID-19 coming this fall and quickly rejected the 70-game offer. Not long afterwards, the MLBPA rejected the MLB's offer to play a 60-game season, causing owners to  vote unanimously to impose a 60-game plan with expanded postseason, however hopes for more teams playing to get to the World Series us still on the table and can be straighten out in a separate deal between owners and players. With spikes in coronavirus happening in several home cities of teams, both sides would agree to health and safety protocols, and that players are to report to training camp on July 1, which is this Wednesday. After all that animosity, let's look at what exactly has been announced for the 2020 MLB season in a short but very interesting #TwitterTrend

Major League Baseball anticipates beginning its 2020 regular season approximately one month from today, on July 23rd or July 24th. #orioles

Ben Nicholson-Smith @bnicholsonsmith
MLB sent the MLBPA a 60-game regular season schedule for review. Per MLB, "it will largely feature divisional play, with the remaining portion of each Club’s games against their opposite league’s corresponding geographical division (i.e., East vs. East)

Ben Nicholson-Smith @bnicholsonsmith
Per MLB 'the vast majority' of teams are expected to hold training camps at the ballparks in their primary home cities. #BlueJays may be an exception here. Club working through decision now, but Dunedin Fla. a candidate to be their 'spring' home.

Daren Stoltzfus @DarenStoltzfus
Happy to see #MLB sticking to traditional postseason format, but as strange as this 60 game season will be, it would have been cool to see them go outside the box a little and experiment with playoffs

Loved the idea of trying to incorporate the college baseball postseason format

A sprint to the finish from the very start. Let's keep everyone healthy and do some baseball!

#JustSoYouKnow, the MLB, the NHL, and most of all the NBA will return-to-play at the same time in late-July, there has never been a time where so many major league sports games in this country will be seen under surreal circumstances, and we may never see anything like this again. Last Friday, the NBA announced the 8-game schedule for the 22 teams remaining this season, Commissioner Adam Sliver has done a great job with ensuring basketball fans that were will be a NBA Champion crowned in 2020 despite what's going on now and what lies ahead. The NBA has chosen the EPSN World Wide of Sports complex at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida with many of games this summer broadcasted on NBA TV, TNT, EPSN and ABC. We all know the format for this 22-team tournament, and before we can "may the better team win", let's look at the game schedule presented in many tweets from last Friday along with some other stuff fans should know.
