This Week's UPDATES

Let me tell you my Thanksgiving plans this week, tomorrow after I finish class at LaGuardia, I'm going to a campus tour at City College of New York. This will be almost different from the Open House I went to a few weeks and it will be fun to know more about the senior college i wish to go to in a few years. On Tuesday, after I finish class I'm going Regal Cinemas to see Disney's Frozen 2, I've been listening to all of the hype for this movie for many months now, dating back to went the first trailer was released in February. I feel that this is something that I have do and if I don't see the movie in theaters, I'm going to regret it later on. On Wednesday, it's Thanksgiving Eve and I want to take a trip to IHOP to try out their new holiday breakfast menu, then go to LaGaurdia and meet with the Film Club before we all head home for Thanksgiving on Thursday. I don't need to tell anyone what I'll be doing on day, but on Black Friday I'm going to do something I've never done before, and that's online shopping. Thanks to my accounts from Chase and Amazon, I won;t have to step into the cold next month to do Christmas Shopping. Well those are my plans for this week, but before I can get started, it's time once again to dive into another 7-Day Round-Up with some interesting topics for your viewing pleasure.

Our Main Story this week concerns Basketball, the sport that brought you the "Malice at the Palace" from fifteen years ago. We could spend the whole this piece looking at old clips from the massive brawl that took place between the Indiana Pacers and the Detroit Pistons on November 19, 2004, but instead we're going to deal with a story that would affect these two NBA teams and all the other 28 teams in the years to come. Yesterday, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski and Zach Lowe reported that the NBA is engaged in “serious discussions” with the National Basketball Players Association and broadcast partners to make drastic changes to the league calendar. These changes would include a reseeding of the four conference finalists, a 30-team in-season tournament and a postseason play-in. When I first read this story I was having trouble understanding it, but it's that NBA Commissioner Adam Sliver wants to break the system that the NBA has run on for many years and try something that would take a lot of guts to pull off. To figure out what exactly Sliver is proposing, we now go into a special edition of #TwitterTrend.

SportsCenter @SportsCenter
The NBA is seriously discussing changes with the NBPA and broadcast partners that could include ...

∙ Reseeding the 4 conference finalists
∙ 30 team in-season tourney
∙ Postseason play-in games
∙ 78-game season

(via @wojespn and @ZachLowe_NBA)

Adrian Wojnarowski @wojespn
Proposals would lower regular season to a minimum of 78 games. Discussions are progressing with hope of bringing a vote to an April meeting of Board of Governors that would introduce some, if not all, of these proposals into the NBA’s 75th anniversary season of 2021-2022.

Trevor Lane @Trevor_Lane
Wow...potentially massive changes for the NBA

Trevor Lane @Trevor_Lane
Re-seeding conference finals is interesting. I like top 16 regardless of conference, but at least this would potentially end problem where best teams meet in the conf. finals, like when Shaq/Kobe Lakers battled in West playoffs only to get a softball from the East in NBA Finals

Austin Bogues @AustinBogues
The East West format doesn’t work anymore. For example in 2018 the Finals should have been Rockets v Dubs.

Kyle Neubeck @KyleNeubeck
My prediction is an in season tournament would play out exactly like League Cup in England and other equivalents — good teams play young guys and two-way players early, probably get bounced by non-playoff team starters, few that survive play real team starting in quarters/semis

Sean Woodley @woodleysean
the in season tournament will fucking rule and anyone who disagrees needs to activate their right brain

Dave DuFour @DaveDuFourNBA
An in-season tournament that nobody will care about, played by G league call ups, is exactly what we need.

Chase Hughes @ChaseHughesNBCS
Yes to the postseason play-in games, been pining for those for years.

Paolo Uggetti @PaoloUggetti
Love this. Making some regular season games double as pre-knockout round games is great.

Bobby Karalla @bobbykaralla
An in-season tournament would be cool and would probably be very competitive. A play-in would in theory disincentivize tanking to a degree. Reseeding in the conference finals is whatever; the road there is still more difficult in one conference. But I'm still on board.

Rick Bonnell @rick_bonnell
The NBA remaking the wheel? This is all stuff that has been floated in the past, but sounds like momentum for serious change.

Ben Axelrod @BenAxelrod
I’ve never understood the appeal of an in-season tournament, but the rest of these changes are fine

Dylan Scott @dylanlscott
playoff play-in: good idea

semifinal reseeding: good idea

shorter season: good idea

in-season tournament (???): dumb

Tommy Beer @TommyBeer

fascinating.

props to Adam Silver and the NBA for their willingness to think outside the box and shake things up.

adam aaronson @SixersAdam
• in-season tournament would be fun as hell if everyone takes it seriously, but not sure why they would

• conference finals reseeding is a great idea

• play-in tournament seems like a nice idea. at the very least, gives four extra teams + fanbases a playoff feel / experience

Down Goes Brown @DownGoesBrown
Some fascinating ideas in here, including the conference re-seeding format I suggested for the NHL last year. Really interesting to see what a progressive, creative league is willing to consider. https://theathletic.com/731285/2018/12/26/down-goes-brown-how-id-fix-the-nhls-playoff-format/

Travis Yost @travisyost
Long live the NBA. It’s amazing what leadership can do for a league.

Tim Cato @tim_cato
reseed the entire postseason, best 16 teams

reduce the games significantly, ideally 62 (3 against division and 2 vs all others)

that's it! that's all you need to do!!
