Today's UPDATES

The 2018 NBA All-Star Game is just one week from Sunday, and there have been a lot of changes to the game and the Saturday Night events in recent weeks. Max Sports has a full rundown of it all: The All-Star Game starters were first announced on January 18th, Kyrie Irving, DeMar DeRozan, LeBron James, Joel Embiid and Giannis Antetokounmpo were chosen as the Eastern Conference starters. As for the Western Conference starters, Stephen Curry, James Harden, Kevin Durant, DeMarcus Cousins and Anthony Davis were named, however the voting for all ten starters was different this NBA Season because, for the first time, players are chosen by not only the fans, but also by the media and current NBA players. Fans made up 50% of the vote, and NBA players and media each comprise 25% of the vote, two guards and three frontcourt players who receive the highest cumulative vote totals are named the All-Star starters. As for the All-Star reserves, they were voted by NBA coaches, each coach selects two guards, three frontcourt players and two wild cards, with each selected player ranked in order of preference within each category. I won't go over the NBA All-Star reserves right now, but I can tell you who is out of All-Star Weekend due to several injuries, DeMarcus Cousins is unable to participate due to an Achilles injury and was replaced by Paul George, John Wall is out due to knee injury and was replaced with Andre Drummond, Kevin Love has a hand injury and was replaced by Goran DragiΔ‡, and last night Kristaps PorziΕ†Δ£is went down with a torn ACL and is not only out for All-Star Weekend but for the remainder of the season. PorziΕ†Δ£is' replacement has not been named yet, but I know he was was supposed to compete in the Taco Bell Skills Challenge and is now out of that event as well, of course, I'm looking looking forward to the Skills Challenge because my favorite Nets' player Spencer Dinwiddie will be in it, so it's going to be real fun to watch him be part of All-Star Weekend and represent the Nets. As we each closer and closer to the NBA All-Star game, we have last night's results of NBA games, as well as stuff from the NHL, and a big main event for WWE Fastlane.

According to Deadline, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the creators of HBO's biggest hit drama Game of Thrones, will be stepping into a new universe: Star Wars. Disney and Lucasfilm announced today that these two will be directing, writing and producing a brand new series of Star Wars film, this comes a few months after they announced Rian Johnson would develop, write and direct his own Star Wars trilogy, but both of these new projects are separate from one another and from the current series of films. The reason am I speaking about this is because of a story I found on twitter and variety.com, and it's the subject of today's #TwitterTrend; television critic Maureen Ryan reported on variety.com that the writers and directors behind the Star Wars universe are almost all white men, and she's not wrong. About 96% of the writers and directors of each of the Star Wars films are indeed white men, and come to think of it, to me that's just disturbing. With new Star Wars films in development, might see some diversity in the writing and directing later on in the future, if Disney and Lucasfilm take note of this report and decide to listen to the fans and do something about the issue. To understand this better, the following tweets tell how people have shared their mixed reactions, some are great and some are not.
Mo Ryan @moryan
Anyhow, a lady wrote a thing about Star Wars. RIP my mentions. It's been an honor to serve with you.

Mo Ryan @moryan
I added up all the writers & directors who've ever been hired to work on a Star Wars film. The creative roster is 96% white men. I've got a bad feeling about this. Here are my thoughts (and the math): http://variety.com/2018/film/columns/star-wars-film-universe-game-of-thrones-weiss-benioff-white-creators-1202689891/

Mo Ryan @moryan
Props to @marcbernardin for his thread earlier on the many directors & creatives who have long been ready to make a contribution to Star Wars film universe. As he said, that roster was just off the top of his head. There's a whole universe of folks whose SW visions I want to see.

Mo Ryan @moryan
Never thought I'd make "doing anger math" into a career but here we are.

Jenny D @ellenprice40
Unfortunately that was easy math for you to do. Sigh.

Jei @ElsinorR
Reddit: "lol, who isn't making a new #StarWars movie right now?"
Me: "Literally any women."

11 movies, all written and directed by men

Jennifer Landa @JenniferLanda
Of course, creators should not be confined to only tell stories relating to their gender/race/ethnicity. But when our industry continues to hire the same type of people over and over again, we get the same kinds of stories with the same type of characters, over and over again.

Jennifer Landa @JenniferLanda
When your production does not employ people from differing backgrounds, it can show onscreen. Storylines may seem too “on the nose”, characters might ring untrue, and you may find your film/show (unintentionally) reinforcing stereotypes.

totally want to see more Women/POC directing Star Wars movies but I can't get mad at @rianjohnson he gave us a female power fantasy in TLJ

WHO CARES

John Singh @JJSingh
I'm vaguely confused by this.  Of the six original films, four were written and directed by one man -- who, by the way, hired two women to write/rewrite two of them.  There were only three directors and three (credited) screenwriters.  That's an awfully small data set.

John Singh @JJSingh
I don't disagree with the principle of what you're trying to say, but six of these films have essentially been auteur-driven.  And they rather pointedly featured both multi-gender and multi-racial casts.  As a whole, "Star Wars" has always felt rather INCLUSIVE to me.

John Singh @JJSingh
Lastly, in my six years working at Lucasfilm, I had the honor of working with people of MANY different races, genders, gender identities, and backgrounds.  Possible THE most wonderfully inclusive place I've ever worked, with an Asian female president at the time, to boot.

Nick Nitsch @wookieebusiness
I'm a little irritated that people calling for diversity in SW can't trust the diversity behind the scenes at Lucasfilm. So many powerful women and non-white creatives making things happen @starwars

Jack Stars @JackStars17
Is it the white part or the man part?  Isn't Kathleen Kennedy, the head of what's happening with Star Wars a women?  Did you by chance see the Last Jedi?  Should we settle for a less talented director, because they meet a certain race or gender requirement?  Is your Nanny white?

Breminem @BremTweets
In fairness we don’t know who’s going to actually direct any of the newly announced films outside of Rian Johnson doing the first one in his trilogy. Definitely possible we get some much needed diversity. I have to believe Kathleen Kennedy is aware of these criticisms.

In other Disney news, Tokyo Disney Resort is celebrating its 35th Anniversary this April and the celebration might come with a big announcement. Tokyo Disney Resort opening on April 15, 1983 as a single theme park known as Tokyo Disneyland, it's located in Urayasu, Chiba, Japan and is owned and operated by the Oriental Land Company with a license from The Walt Disney Company. It was also the first Disney theme park to be outside the United States, Paris, Hong Kong and Shanghai would then follow to become major Disney Parks in their own right, but Tokyo Disney Resort is special mostly because its second park being themed to water, Tokyo DisneySea. It opened on September 4, 2001, just a week before the September 11th attacks on America, it holds the record for the fastest theme park in the world to reach the milestone of 10 million guests, having done so in 307 days after its grand opening. Sometime during Super Bowl Weekend, a news report from the japanese newspaper's "The Mainichi" that a third gate park could be added to Tokyo Disney Resort, and the theme of it would be sky and space, they would even call it "Tokyo DisneySky." I find this to be a stroke of genius because having three parks themed after land, sea and sky is just what park guests would like to see. It is said that the park would begin construction early next year in 2019 and then completed for a 2022 opening, it would also be anchored by a Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge land, Pandora - The World of Avatar, and other properties from Disney, Pixar and Marvel, so who knows, we could see the Guardians of the Galaxy or Captain Marvel fly in Tokyo if reports on this new park are confirmed. Web Choice is calling on a few video to break down this epic story, such as my good friend Jack Kendall from DSNY Newscast.
